ShakeSafe — Privacy Policy

ShakeSafe ("the app") is an earthquake awareness and social safety app operated by Kasegu LLC, 2108 N St, Sacramento, CA 95816, United States. Contact: f@kasegu.llc.

Data we collect

• Account: when you sign in with Google or Apple we receive your name, email address, and profile photo URL. We create an account identifier for you.
• Location: with your permission, your device location is used to show nearby earthquakes, compute your local risk estimate, run the onboarding area analysis, and — only when you tap "I am safe" / "Need assistance" — attach your position to that safety broadcast so your circle can see it.
• Follow my location: if you explicitly enable following on a phone, ShakeSafe collects location updates while you use the app to move that phone's earthquake alert area. Background updates require a separate opt-in and background location permission. We store the latest latitude and longitude, reported accuracy, and capture time for that phone, linked to your account and phone installation. Each update replaces the previous location in the following-alert record. Analytics and session replay data are described separately below.
• Contacts: if you use contact sync, your address book is read on your device to help you pick people to invite. Only the email address of a contact you explicitly invite is uploaded and stored. Your full address book never leaves your device.
• Safety circle data: circle membership, invites, "felt it" reports, safety statuses, and check-in pings.
• Alert zones: the places you choose to watch (name, coordinates, radius, magnitude threshold).
• Device data: push notification tokens and basic device model info, used to deliver alerts.
• Analytics and session replay: we use PostHog to understand app use and troubleshoot problems. This includes app lifecycle and feature-use events, app and device information, and session replays of app screens and interactions. When you sign in, we associate analytics with your account identifier and email address. Replay is configured to mask text and text inputs where supported by the SDK; images are not globally masked, so on-screen images and map content may be visible. Diagnostic logs, network request URLs (which may contain place searches), and request timing may also be included.

What other people see

People in your safety circle see your name, initials or profile photo, your safety status, and the location you attach to a safety broadcast. Nothing is public.

Your following location is not shared with your safety circle. Attaching a location to a safety broadcast is a separate action.

Services we use

Supabase (database, authentication, hosting), Google and Apple (sign-in), Mapbox (map rendering and place search — your map viewport and search terms are sent to Mapbox), Expo (app updates and push delivery), RevenueCat (purchase management, if subscriptions are enabled), and PostHog (analytics and session replay, using its US service). Earthquake data comes from public seismic agencies including USGS, EMSC, GEOFON and national networks; queries to these services may include coordinates you search or watch.

What we don't do

We do not sell your data, run third-party advertising, or track you across other apps and websites.

Retention & deletion

A following location is no longer used for following alerts once it is six hours old. This alert cutoff does not automatically delete the stored location. It is replaced by a newer update or cleared when stopping following is confirmed by the server.

Stop following stops new location collection on that phone. If you are offline or the change cannot reach the server, the app keeps a pending stop request locally. Until the stop is synchronized, the server may still use the last location for following alerts, but only until six hours after that location was captured. Reconnect and reopen ShakeSafe to finish stopping; the app shows whether the stop is still pending. Once confirmed, the server clears that phone's following coordinates, accuracy, and capture time, and its saved primary alert location resumes. Your other saved places remain active.

Delete your account any time in the app: Account → Delete account. Deleting your account removes your account, profile, saved alerts, device and location-following records, safety statuses, and friends-and-family connections from our active database.

Automatic app account deletion does not also delete separate analytics and session replay data. Contact f@kasegu.llc to request deletion of that data or other assistance with deleting your data.

Important safety notice

ShakeSafe is an informational tool, not an official emergency warning system. Alerts depend on third-party data sources, network conditions, and device settings, and may be delayed, inaccurate, or unavailable. Always follow guidance from your local civil-protection authorities.
